As a former professional racing driver, I've seen a lot of driving videos – either from the driver's POV (point of view) or from some other interesting angle. As the owner of Wilsonville Honda, I continue to have family, friends, and customers, send me links to great videos. One of my favorites is of former Formula 1 driver Ricardo Patrese taking his wife for a lap around the Jerez racing circuit, located in Spain. Having given thousands of "hot laps" during my professional racing career, I enjoy this clip for a number of reasons. Here are a few:

• At one time, Ricardo was one of the best drivers in the world – maybe not the best, but certainly he possessed (and still possesses) a set of skills blended with genetic ability that places him off the charts when compared to a "civilian" driver. Still, he is hassled when leaving the pits. Remember, Ricardo retired having started more Formula 1 Grand Prix races than any driver in history (257), yet he is admonished to drive slowly and carefully… I've been in this position dozens of times – a track official exercising their power as to whether a professional racing driver be allowed on the circuit… geez…
• The car. He's driving a Honda Civic Type R. Sure it's a nice street car, but compared to a Formula 1 car… well, there's no comparison. I mention this because:
• The language. Italian. I don't speak Italian, but you don't have to in order to appreciate the "communication" that occurs, even at a speed that is "pedestrian" for Ricardo.
• His wife. Just watch her reaction. It's only a Civic! Ricardo is traveling significantly slower than what his brain is programmed and accustomed to going. Her emotional range leaves me laughing each and every time. Perhaps the funniest part of the entire clip, after she laughs, pleads, screams, swears… all an indicator that she had no idea what was coming, is when she says, "This happens every time I take a lap with you!" She knew what was coming… and she went anyway.
• Ricardo. He epitomizes a professional racing driver. He's cool, calm, and collected. Notice how still his upper body is and how smooth he is with the steering wheel. The only thing that moves are the corners of his mouth – into a very subtle smile as his wife's reactions increase.
• The camera. His wife is unaware of the camera until they come into the pits. Perfect!
